Second Side Wrap-Up

FINALLY - the second side is totally finished with the siding and soffit. The end result looks fantastic and was worth the endless hours of painting shingles. But, I still have a long way to go.

I've already done a third of the front, which gives me a jump on the third side. In between some wicked storms this weekend I managed to get the center section stripped, flashed, and papered and then today I installed the starter and first course. Now it's back to making more batches of shingles again.....

I pretty much finished landscaping the driveway side as well complete with birdbath, sundial, and Rach added a gnome for good measure! There's at least 15 different plants along here which should really take shape next year. All I need to do still is add some sand and set the slate pavers permanently.

It's looking really nice. Great job on those shingles! You're putting builder's paper or tar paper under there, aren't you? (If you've mentioned this before I apologize--I've only read this one post so far.)

Wow -- that is looking really good. You plan on finishing before year end?

I may be starting a house with even more cedar shingles before too long. One question: how are you affixing them to the house? Some people swear by a stapler, others, a nailer. Either way it's an air compressor and all that that entails, and given that I'm going to have to do the whole house, I'd like to get off to the right start.

I'm using 15# tar paper.

I hope to finish this year, but fall will be busy for me at work, so may not get the last side done....we'll see.

Believe it or not I'm hand nailing! I got a half price deal on 5d stainless ring shanked nails - which aren't cheap. Hand nailing keeps me at a slower pace, but that gives me enough time to plan ahead without getting ahead of myself, especially with the pattern. I just doing straight runs, and not held up by the amount you have painted, than air nailer would be the way to go, and they do make stainless nails for the air nailer. I would definitely go ring shanked, since those DO NOT come out once their in. I usually have to cut one when I bend it. No falling shakes do to bad nails!
